Offering a website in several languages usually means a lot of work. Texts have to be exported, translations imported, a second language version kept up to date or a translation proxy put in front of the website. With alinio we have built a service that reduces all of this to a single line of code. alinio translates websites right in the browser of the visitors. Whoever picks a language sees the page in that language at once, without a reload and with the layout unchanged.

How it works

  1. Add your website: enter the address, the source language and the target languages in the dashboard.

  2. Insert the script tag: one line in the page template, preferably in the <head>:

  3. Visitors pick their language: a compact language switcher appears in a corner of the page. The choice applies to all further pages.

This works wherever a script tag can be added: WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, static HTML as well as React, Vue or Angular apps.

The features

  • The layout stays intact: only the text changes. Scripts, forms and event handlers keep working, no copy of the website is created.
  • Links and formatting are preserved: bold words, links and icons inside a sentence are translated along and follow the grammar of the target language.
  • Translation editor: every sentence can be checked and corrected in the dashboard. Manual changes go live at once and are never overwritten by the machine translation.
  • Glossary and exceptions: terms that must not be translated go into the glossary. translate="no" or the class notranslate exclude whole elements, ideal for brand names, prices or code.
  • Dynamic content: text that JavaScript loads later and page changes in single-page apps are translated as soon as they appear.
  • Right to left: for Arabic, Hebrew and Persian the reading direction of the page switches automatically.
  • No cookies, no tracking: the language choice is stored in the localStorage of the browser. Only the text of the pages is processed.

Because the translation happens in the browser, search engines keep indexing the original language. alinio is made for the visitors of a website, not as an SEO tool.

Why it is fast

Much on a website repeats itself: navigation, footer, product names. alinio therefore translates every sentence only once per website and then delivers it from the cache for all pages and all visitors.
